Lock Rekey or Replacement?05/06/2015 Back To Blog
There are various reasons for why you may find yourself contemplating about having a lock rekey or replacement. You may have moved into a new house, office or apartment, someone living with your may have moved out, or your home or office locks were lost. So is rekeying the best option or is it better to get a lock change?
Understanding Your Options
Moving in to a new home or office, or having someone move out both pose risks of having previous owners or tenants gain access as they might still have duplicate copies of the keys in your place without you knowing. Lost house keys could also pose security risks as these keys could be used to get in your property. If you find yourself in any of these situations and your door locks are still in great condition, rekeying is a more practical solution. This is cheaper and faster to do. The cylinders would be adjusted to work on a new set of keys. The old ones would no longer work with them. So you would basically have the original locks with new keys. There’s no need to purchase new ones and have them installed.
However, if a break-in occurred causing the locks to be damaged, lock replacement is recommended instead of fixing them and having them rekeyed. The mere fact that intruders were able to get in the house suggests that your locks are not durable enough. Consider purchasing high security products as replacement of the old ones. Even if you have not experienced this situation, if you feel that your locks are not enough to secure your place, you may consider replacement. You may call a professional locksmith so he could tell you if your locks require replacement, in case you’re not sure on what to do. Whether you end up getting a rekey or replacement, there are simple safety tips that you need to remember, including keeping the doors and windows locked when you go out, and not placing keys at the back of the door where they can be easily reached from the outside. Don’t leave duplicate copies of keys outside the door too as unauthorized people might find them.
